I have only known the passion of Shiv Kumar Batalvi for a few years, and am completely in love with this romantic poet. I first heard his verses as sung by the king of ghazals Jagjit Singh. My grasp of Punjabi is meagre, but good friends like Tarsem Deogan have helped tackle difficult words, and illuminated me time after time tirelessly answering my calls for help with diction and meaning. Tarsem has gifted his beautiful mother tongue to me in friendship, and I want to thank him for his help and support over the years.
